Two men in a stolen Honda led El Monte police officers on an hour-long pursuit today. El Monte Police Agent Raul Linn said the incident started around 10:30 a.m. when officers tried to stop the battered, early 90s model Honda for a traffic violation near Ramona Boulevard and Durfee Avenue. Dispatchers told the officers the vehicle had been reported stolen and after the driver failed to yield, the chase was on. A detective who happened to be in the area laid out spike strips and punctured the car’s two back tires about 20 minutes into the chase. But the driver kept going, leading officers on surface streets at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour through El Monte, Baldwin Park, Temple City and Industry before finally stopping on Valley Boulevard near Hacienda Boulevard in La Puente. Police arrested Alvaro Montes, 19, of El Monte who was the alleged driver and passenger David Padilla, 27, of Pomona. They are being held at El Monte City Jail on charges of grand theft auto and evading arrest.
