first_imgJune 14, 20190 Comments Blog Dominican Republic tourist deaths still a mysterycenter_img A slew of US tourist deaths have occurred under mysterious circumstances in the Dominican Republic.The Dominican Republic government has hired “crisis management” specialists after a series of mysterious deaths on the island.Six seemingly healthy US tourists have died in unexplained circumstances – four of which have occurred in the last two months.One of those who died is businesswoman and “Shark Tank” personality Barbara Corcoran’s brother, John.Most of the deaths are described as happening suddenly and after consuming an alcoholic drink.Local media reports suggest bootleg alcohol may be a factor.The FBI has stepped in to investigate and is conducting toxicology analyses, a process that could take up to a month to complete.Adding to the frantic news reports, Red Sox player David Ortiz, who is originally from the country, was shot in a Santo Domingo nightclub on Sunday. He was flown to Boston for treatment.The Dominican Republic attracts more than 6 million visitors each year.The island nation is attempting to downplay the connection the deaths may have with one another.André Van Der Horst, the tourism adviser to the Dominican Republic, told the Washington Post that all of the incidents are unrelated but “coincided in timing.”“With social media today, we are exposed and require an immediate response to the current public relations dynamic, a new reality worldwide,” he said.“We are not used to this type of viral communicational outburst and are working with crisis management specialists to establish reaction protocols.”last_img read more
